A woman of mystery and danger, Loralie is the hereditary Guardian of the Citadel, and she has a lot to answer for. Terrible things have been done with her powerful magic on behalf of evil men who kidnapped her daughter. Against her will, her magic is being used, and the protections she was bred to uphold are failing one by one.

Detlif, a man she once loved and thought she had lost forever, is now the Captain of the Guard of the fair folk enclave that guards one of the Gates to the Citadel. He had given up on love when Loralie left suddenly without a goodbye. When she returned nine months later to give him his infant son before disappearing again, he imagined the worst about her. However, there is much about his former lover that he didn't know, including a twin daughter he had only just discovered.

A meddling dragon presents an opportunity to break the magical chains binding the girl, prompting Loralie to send her precious daughter to be reunited with her twin and their father. With her daughter safe, Loralie can concentrate on seeking revenge and stopping the evil plot threatening the lands, but she is unprepared for Detlif's interference.

Loralie believes that only her death can atone for the suffering she has caused. She had resigned herself to her fate, but seeing Detlif again makes her yearn for more time – with him, with their children. Detlif knows of Loralie's misdeeds, but as he begins to understand the reasons behind them, he searches for a way to create a happy ending for her, their children, and himself. Although the challenge is daunting and perilous, he is determined not to fail. This time, he wants Loralie forever, and he will stop at nothing to achieve that goal.
